《壮志凌云》是作为征兵宣传片而拍摄的，所以摄制组获得了美国军方的大力协助。美国海军提供了VF-1“狼群”中队、VF-51“猎鹰”中队、VF-111“落日者”中队、VF-114“土豚”中队、VF-213“黑狮”中队5个中队的现役F-14战斗机与8名现役飞行员参加影片的拍摄。

另外，作为F-14对手的A-4攻击机与F-5战斗机（片中的MiG-28），则来自米拉马航空站与影片同名的TOPGUN学校，其飞行员则是该校的飞行教官。“企业”号、“卡尔·文森”号、“突击者”号航空母舰也在片中露了面。
